Highest-End Assisted Living
Communities (Southern California)
Southern California is home to some of the nation’s most luxurious assisted living communities. Below, we highlight several top-tier communities within ~300 miles of Los Angeles – spanning urban Los Angeles, coastal enclaves, and desert resort areas – and detail their costs, requirements, amenities, care services, accommodations, and reputation.
Belmont Village Westwood – Los Angeles (Urban Luxury)
Monthly Cost: Assisted living at Belmont Westwood starts around $11,300 per month for a studio, with memory care suites around $15,000+ per month. (Some residents with minimal care needs have reported fees around $7,000 monthly for smaller) There is no large entrance fee – residency is month-to-month.
Acceptance Requirements: No special buy-in is required; prospective residents undergo an assessment to ensure the community can meet their care needs. Belmont is a licensed Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) and typically serves ages 60 and up (standard for California RCFE licensing). Financially, residents must be able to cover the substantial monthly fees.
Amenities: This high-rise community offers resort-like amenities: an on-site café, gourmet dining room, movie theater, and a furnished outdoor patio. It hosts an enriching activity calendar including lectures by UCLA professors (Belmont Westwood is affiliated with UCLA), film screenings with Hollywood insiders, cultural events, fitness programs, and. Concierge transportation for outings and appointments is provided, and common areas are elegant and inviting.
Age Requirements: Residents are generally older adults (typically 60+). There is no explicit minimum age beyond the state’s RCFE guideline (age 60), but in practice Belmont Westwood caters to retired seniors (often in their 70s and beyond).
Care Services: Belmont Westwood offers a full continuum of care on-site: independent living, assisted living, and memory care, with staff and licensing to provide high levels of care as needs evolve. A licensed nurse is on-site 24/7, which is rare in assisted living and ensures medication management and health monitoring at all. Caregivers assist with activities of daily living (dressing, bathing, mobility, etc.) as needed. The community is known for its award-winning memory enrichment programs for residents with cognitive. Belmont’s partnership with UCLA and other institutions means access to innovative wellness programming and therapies.
Accommodations: Studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments are available, each with a kitchenette or full kitchen and high-end finishes. All units are licensed for assisted living or memory care, meaning residents can age in place. Apartments are equipped with emergency call systems; weekly housekeeping and laundry services are included.
Reputation & Awards: Belmont Village Westwood is widely regarded as a premier senior community in Los Angeles. It has consistently positive family reviews and was described as “the go-to location for LA’s most discerning seniors”. Belmont Village as an operator has earned industry accolades – for example, Fortune’s “Best Workplaces for Aging Services” (2022) – reflecting strong staff culture and care. In Seniorly’s 2025 ratings it scored among the top in Los Angeles, and residents often liken the environment to a “high-end hotel” in terms of service. Its UCLA affiliation and Westwood address further bolster its prestige.
The Watermark at Beverly Hills – Beverly Hills (Urban Luxury)
Monthly Cost: The Watermark is a boutique luxury assisted living residence. Studios and one-bedroom suites start at about $8,000 per month, with additional fees for care services depending on the level of assistance needed. All-inclusive pricing (including high-tier care) can range upwards of $9,000 per month for larger units.
Acceptance Requirements: The Watermark operates on a rental model with no entrance fee. Prospective residents (usually age 60+) must demonstrate a need for assisted living or memory care and the financial means for the monthly costs. A care assessment is conducted to create a personalized service plan. There are no strict medical cutoff criteria beyond what the assisted living license allows (those with very high medical acuity may require skilled nursing elsewhere).
Amenities: Watermark at Beverly Hills offers an intimate, five-star hotel-like atmosphere. Despite its smaller size, it is packed with amenities: a 24-hour concierge, daily gourmet meals served restaurant-style, private dining for family events, a fitness studio with group classes (yoga, tai chi, etc.), a full-service salon/spa, and a library and media lounge. Watermark’s signature Watermark University program provides on-site lifelong learning classes (from art and philosophy to fitness) open to residents and neighbors. The activity calendar is full of lectures, cultural outings, and social events, taking advantage of its location in the heart of Beverly Hills.
Age Requirements: Primarily 62+ (though many residents are in their 80s). As an assisted living community in California, the typical minimum age is 60. Watermark’s marketing targets affluent seniors, often those downsizing from local luxury homes, so the resident demographic skews older retirees.
Care Services: This community provides assisted living and memory care on a very personalized basis. Services include chef-prepared meals, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and daily planned activities, all included in base rent. Personal care assistance (help with dressing, grooming, bathing, escorting, etc.) and medication management are available at additional cost based on the resident’s care level. Staff are on-site 24/7, and care is delivered discreetly, fitting the community’s upscale, private ambiance. While Watermark BH does not offer skilled nursing, it coordinates with home health or medical providers as needed. It is known for high staff-to-resident ratios and attentive service (think of a boutique hotel staff, but trained in elder care).
Accommodations: The Watermark features spacious studio and one-bedroom apartments with high ceilings and upscale finishes. Units include kitchenettes, and many have Juliet balconies or large windows overlooking the tree-lined neighborhood. The setting is a mid-rise building on a quiet residential street, giving a cozy feel (fewer than ~40 units in total, which fosters a close-knit community). Weekly housekeeping and linen service are provided. The environment is pet-friendly and designed to feel like a luxury residence with emergency call systems subtly integrated.
Reputation & Awards: Opened in 2010, Watermark at Beverly Hills quickly became known as one of the most exclusive senior residences in LA, often attracting former executives, professionals, and celebrities. It has earned a “Best Assisted Living” designation in local Beverly Hills surveys and garners excellent reviews for its food, activities, and personalized care. The community’s small size and Beverly Hills address set it apart – it’s routinely listed among the priciest and most upscale assisted living options in Los Angeles. The Watermark brand is known nationally for luxury senior communities, and the Beverly Hills location lives up to that reputation, often described as a “boutique hotel for seniors” with top-notch hospitality.
Ciela Senior Living – Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles (Urban/Coastal Luxury)
Monthly Cost: Ciela is a newly built luxury senior living community (opened 2023) with independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Monthly rates begin at about $9,500 for both independent and assisted living apartments. Memory care suites start around $15,995 per month for the specialized higher level of care. These fees are all-inclusive, covering meals, most utilities, amenities, and basic care; higher care levels can incur additional cost if needed.
Acceptance Requirements: As a private-pay luxury community, Ciela requires prospective residents to demonstrate the financial ability to afford its fees. A health assessment is done to ensure the resident’s needs align with services available (those needing skilled nursing would be referred out). Minimum age is typically 60 (with most residents being retirees in their 70s or above). There is no entrance fee or buy-in; residency is month-to-month. Given Ciela’s boutique size (only 82 units), availability can be limited – the community may operate a waitlist if units are full.
Amenities: Resort-inspired amenities are a hallmark of Ciela. The campus is nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, offering panoramic canyon and mountain views from floor-to-ceiling windows in every apartment. There is a wellness center with a hydrotherapy pool, fitness studio, yoga and meditation classes, and a “Vitality” wellness program emphasizing holistic health. Lush outdoor gardens with walking paths, a vegetable garden, and ample seating areas allow residents to enjoy California’s climate. Dining is chef-driven with a gourmet restaurant plus a casual bistro café; all meals and beverages are included, featuring a “blue zone” healthy menu option. Other amenities include a full-service spa/salon, arts & crafts studio, library, movie theater, and 24-hour concierge service. Ciela also hosts a robust schedule of cultural outings, lectures, and social events, keeping residents engaged daily.
Age Requirements: 55+ community (primarily 60+). Ciela markets to active seniors and retirees; most independent living residents are in their 60s and 70s. The California RCFE license technically requires residents to be adult seniors (usually 60+), so that is effectively the minimum age for assisted living or memory care residents.
Care Services: Ciela provides a full continuum of care on one campus. Independent living residents have peace of mind knowing they can add assisted living services in their same apartment if needed. Assisted living services start at the $9,500/month tier, which includes discrete help with activities of daily living (ADLs) like dressing, bathing, grooming, medication management, and more, delivered in the privacy of one’s apartment. Staff are on-site 24/7 for emergency response and care. In addition, Ciela has a specialized memory care neighborhood for residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia, offering secured accommodations, structured therapies, and a higher staff-to-resident ratio (memory care is priced higher, reflecting the intensive support). Ciela’s care philosophy emphasizes maintaining residents’ independence and dignity – care plans are personalized and adjusted as health needs evolve. While Ciela is not a skilled nursing facility, it partners with outside healthcare providers to provide any skilled nursing or rehabilitation services a resident may require temporarily.
Accommodations: The community offers studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, all built brand-new with modern luxury . Thanks to the property’s hillside location, many units boast sweeping views. Apartments feature high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, upscale fixtures, and emergency call systems. They are also pet-friendly – residents can bring along small pets. Housekeeping, linen service, and maintenance are included. The interior design won awards for its creativity and beauty (Senior Housing News design award), so common areas and private units alike have a high-end, contemporary feel. For example, bathrooms are spa-like, and some apartments have balconies or patios.
Reputation & Awards: Though new on the scene, Ciela has already been recognized for its excellence. Its architecture and design earned an award from Senior Housing News for the visually stunning environment. Early resident feedback and industry buzz highlight Ciela as “next-generation” senior living, raising the bar for luxury in Los Angeles. It was developed by a respected local senior living group and opened to considerable demand. Given its Pacific Palisades location, Ciela attracts affluent Westside Los Angeles seniors – many residents are former professionals or community leaders. As it matures, Ciela is expected to feature in “best of” lists; it is already noted for having one of the most beautiful memory care facilities in LA and an emphasis on healthy living (with farm-to-table dining and robust fitness programming).
Vivante Newport Center – Newport Beach (Coastal Urban Ultra-Luxury)
Monthly Cost: Opened in late 2023, Vivante Newport Center is among the most expensive senior living communities in the U.S. Monthly rents range from approximately $15,000 to $22,000 (and up) per month for its assisted living and memory care residences. These rates are comprehensive, including dining and most services. For example, a one-bedroom (~750 sq ft) starts around $15k, while larger penthouse apartments (up to 2,400 sq ft) command $20k+ monthly. Notably, no long-term buy-in is required – unlike many luxury communities, Vivante operates on a rental model with just a month-to-month residency agreement (residents can leave with 30 days' notice). This provides flexibility for those who can afford the high ongoing fee.
Acceptance Requirements: There is no entrance fee; however, Vivante’s management will verify that prospective residents have the financial resources for the steep monthly rents. A medical assessment ensures the community can meet the person’s care needs (Vivante offers assisted living and memory care, but not on-site skilled nursing, so residents should not require 24-hour medical supervision beyond what assisted living provides). Minimum age is 60 (community is licensed as RCFE). Because of its ultra-luxury positioning, Vivante Newport Center often attracts seniors in their 70s or 80s who are downsizing from high-end homes; many are longtime Newport Beach or Orange County residents. The community also partners with Hoag Hospital: an on-site Hoag Health Clinic offers primary care and wellness services to residents, meaning a health-oriented admission is emphasized.
Amenities: Vivante Newport Center delivers “resort living at its best,” often likened to a five-star Montage hotel experience. Its amenities are extraordinary even by luxury standards. There’s a stunning indoor pool and jacuzzi, a full luxury spa and salon, and a state-of-the-art Vitality fitness center with personal trainers. For recreation, Vivante offers a “fun floor” including a golf simulator room, a two-lane bowling alley, a movie theater with twice-daily showings, an elegant cocktail bar/lounge (The Nightcap) with nightly happy hours, a billiards and game lounge (Players Club), and even private karaoke/TV areas. Outdoor amenities take advantage of Newport’s climate: The Piazza outdoor deck has cabanas with fire pits, a wood-fired pizza oven and BBQ, and ocean views. There’s also Woofington Park, a private dog park for residents’ pets. Dining at Vivante is exceptional: three gourmet venues (e.g. Provence fine-dining restaurant for formal meals, a casual Café Gourmand for coffee, smoothies and snacks throughout the day, and The Riviera private dining room for events). Chefs prepare high-end, seasonal cuisine and can cater to personal preferences. Other amenities include an art studio (with kiln and pottery wheels), a library (“Newport News”), technology center, scheduled luxury transportation (chauffeured cars) for shopping or appointments, and 24-hour concierge service. Vivante’s partnership with Hoag Hospital means on-site wellness clinics, fitness classes, and access to physicians and rehab programs conveniently on the property. The community hosts frequent social events, educational lectures, and philanthropic activities – it’s designed so that residents truly have everything they need on-site as if living in an upscale resort.
Age Requirements: 62+ is typical, though the community may accept residents over 60. Vivante’s residents tend to be older, affluent retirees – many in their seventies or beyond – but the environment is active and vibrant. The average age may skew a bit younger than some communities because of its appeal to those seeking a luxury lifestyle earlier in retirement. Couples are common; the design of apartments and amenities caters to independent, active seniors (with the understanding that care can be added as needed).
Care Services: Vivante Newport Center offers assisted living and memory care, with an emphasis on hospitality combined with high-quality care. Caregivers are on duty 24/7, and each resident has a personalized care plan. Services include assistance with ADLs (bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility, toileting) and medication management as needed, delivered discreetly in residents’ apartments. With the Hoag Health Center on-site, residents have convenient access to primary care, preventative health screenings, lab services, and even some specialty care without leaving the building. The goal is to proactively keep residents healthy – as one director noted, having on-site primary care means “residents have no excuse to delay treatment,” which can prevent small issues from becoming big ones. Memory care at Vivante is located in a secured, specialized floor (with its own dedicated staff and programming), ensuring those with cognitive impairments have a safe, engaging environment. Importantly, skilled nursing is not offered in-house, but thanks to partnerships with Hoag and other providers, home health or hospice can be arranged if a resident’s needs increase. Vivante also touts an award-winning “Vivante Vitality” program – a comprehensive wellness plan integrating fitness, brain health, nutrition, and social connection (this program earned awards for innovation in senior care).
Accommodations: Apartments at Vivante Newport Center are exceptionally spacious and plush. Floor plans range from one-bedroom units (~750 sq ft) up to penthouse suites around 2,400 sq ft (which can be two-bedroom or even three-bedroom configurations). Every unit features a full modern kitchen (high-end appliances, granite/quartz counters), although residents have meal plans included. Units also have luxury bathrooms (with step-in showers and designer finishes), in-unit washer/dryer, and private patios or balconies in many cases. The interior design has a French Mediterranean flair to match the building’s architecture – elegant lighting, crown moldings, and custom cabinetry. Housekeeping, linen service, and maintenance are provided, and valet parking is available for those who still drive (including underground parking). Vivante’s building is a high-rise, so many residences offer sweeping views of Newport Beach, including the coastline and city lights. For an even more exclusive experience, the top floor penthouse units come with extra services and the largest layouts. All apartments, of course, include emergency call systems. Vivante is pet-friendly and even offers pet care services, aligning with its comprehensive hospitality model.
Reputation & Awards: Though newly opened, Vivante Newport Center has generated significant buzz as one of the most luxurious senior living communities in the country. Media coverage noted that “a lot of people walk in and say this looks like a Montage hotel” due to its lavish design. The developer (Nexus Companies) spared no expense, and it shows – families and industry professionals from around the world have toured it as a model of next-level senior living. The community is currently about 30% occupied (as of early 2025) and is quickly filling up with prominent locals. Newsweek ranked Vivante Newport Center among the top new senior communities in California, and it has a partnership with Hoag Hospital that is seen as a gold standard for integrating healthcare and senior housing. Residents and their families have been impressed with the fine dining and the sheer breadth of amenities – from the bowling alley to the rooftop decks. Vivante’s approach of month-to-month flexibility, albeit at a very high price point, is also innovative for this level of luxury. In summary, Vivante Newport Center has a “best of the best” reputation, offering an extravagant retirement lifestyle for those to whom cost is no object.
Casa Dorinda – Montecito (Santa Barbara Coastal Estate Luxury)
Monthly Cost: Casa Dorinda is an exclusive LifeCare continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Montecito. It requires a one-time entrance fee ranging roughly from $140,000 up to $1.25 million (depending on the size/location of the residence and refund plan). In addition, residents pay monthly fees of approximately $3,300 up to $7,500 for the all-inclusive services. (These figures were effective around 2012; current fees in 2025 are somewhat higher – recent estimates indicate entrance fees now up to ~$1.1–1.3 million and monthly fees in the $5,000–$8,300 range, depending on unit and contracts.) Importantly, Casa Dorinda’s LifeCare contract means that if a resident needs assisted living or skilled nursing on-site, their monthly fee does not increase because the higher level of care is covered by the contract. This predictable cost model is a hallmark of Casa Dorinda. A portion of the entrance fee is typically refundable to one’s estate (minus a deduction after a certain number of years).
Acceptance Requirements: Casa Dorinda has stringent medical and financial entrance requirements and is known for its waiting list. All applicants must be at least 62 years old at entry. The application process involves submitting a detailed application with a $750 non-refundable processing fee. Applicants must demonstrate “robust financial strength,” including assets and income sufficient to pay ongoing fees (and cushion for future fee increases of ~3–7% annually). A personal financial statement is required as part of the review. Medically, Casa requires incoming residents to be in relatively good health and self-sufficient, capable of living independently for at least two years upon move-in. A physical exam by the applicant’s doctor and an in-person health assessment by Casa Dorinda’s medical director are conducted to ensure the health standards are met. Because Casa Dorinda is so sought-after, the waiting list is currently around 5 years on average. Being accepted onto the waiting list does not guarantee eventual entry – one must still be medically eligible when a unit becomes available. In short, Casa Dorinda selects for healthy, financially secure seniors typically from affluent backgrounds.
Amenities: Casa Dorinda offers country-club-caliber amenities on a historic 48-acre estate in Montecito. The property was originally a 1918 mansion estate, and the community retains a grand, garden-like ambiance. There is a 5-star dining program, including fine dining at a formal dining room (with complimentary champagne brunches weekly) and more casual bistro options. Residents enjoy a 3,200 sq. ft. fitness center and heated outdoor pool on site, plus tennis courts and walking paths through landscaped grounds and oak groves. Cultural and educational activities are abundant – Casa Dorinda has its own auditorium for concerts and lectures, an on-site art studio, a well-stocked library, and regular excursions to local theaters, museums, and beaches. There are resident-tended gardens and hobby clubs (bridge groups, book clubs, etc.) that thrive in the socially active environment. The estate’s historic mansion serves as a clubhouse with elegant lounges, a chapel, and meeting rooms. For convenience, Casa provides scheduled shuttle transportation to local Santa Barbara and Montecito destinations (shops, medical appointments, etc.). Additional amenities include an on-site beauty salon/barber, a billiards room, and guest accommodations for visitors. The community emphasizes a rich lifestyle of culture, fitness, and intellectual stimulation – e.g. residents organize lecture series, and the proximity to Santa Barbara’s music and arts scene is a plus. Overall, Casa Dorinda combines the elegance of a grand estate with the services of a luxury resort, all tailored to senior living.
Age Requirements: 62 and older. Casa Dorinda strictly enforces a minimum entry age of 62 for all residents. (Typically, couples both must be 62+, though occasionally a slightly younger spouse might be considered.) The resident population’s average age is often mid-80s, due to the long waitlist and the fact that many move in during their early 70s or later.
Care Services: As a LifeCare CCRC, Casa Dorinda provides a full continuum: independent living, assisted living, memory care, and a 24-hour skilled nursing health center, all on campus. Crucially, if a resident transitions from independent to assisted living or skilled nursing, their monthly fee remains the same (no increase for higher care). The community has an on-site medical clinic with physicians and nurses available; skilled nursing and rehab services (physical therapy, etc.) are offered in a health center wing for both short-term and long-term needs. Licensed nurses are on duty 24/7 in the health center, and emergency response systems are in place throughout the campus. Assisted Living and Memory Care are provided in dedicated private suites with their own dining and activity areas, staffed by trained caregivers around the clock. This allows residents to receive more help (medication management, help with bathing/dressing, incontinence care, etc.) when needed, without leaving the community. Casa Dorinda’s model covers essentially all healthcare “for life” – the LifeCare contract even covers the Medicare co-pay for skilled nursing days, providing significant value and peace of mind. Hospice care can also be accommodated on-site if ever necessary. The community’s decades of experience (established in 1975) means they have refined care protocols and a deep bench of medical professionals. During the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, Casa Dorinda earned praise for keeping residents safe and well-cared for. Overall, the promise is that one can “age in place” gracefully at Casa, with virtually every medical or personal care need attended to as part of the community’s offerings.
Accommodations: Casa Dorinda offers a wide variety of high-end residences. Options range from studio apartments (~440 sq ft) up through deluxe two-bedroom units (over 1,700 sq ft), as well as a few stand-alone cottages/villas on the grounds. No two apartments are exactly alike – each can be customized and updated to the incoming resident’s tastes. One-bedroom units come in standard, large, and deluxe configurations (approx 685 to 1,075 sq ft). Two-bedroom units similarly range from ~985 sq ft up to ~1,715 sq ft. The most sought-after are the unique cottages and the historic mansion apartments, which often have waiting lists 5+ years long. All residences include full kitchens or kitchenettes, emergency call systems, and either a patio, balcony, or scenic view (the campus is beautifully landscaped). Prior to move-in, each unit is renovated (if needed) and painted/carpeted to the new resident’s preferences – a personalized touch. Weekly housekeeping and flat linen service are included; laundry appliances are often in-unit for independent living, or laundry service is provided. The decor and ambiance are upscale yet comfortable – many units have fireplaces or custom-built-ins, reflecting Casa’s high-end retirement living style.
Reputation & Awards: Casa Dorinda is sometimes dubbed the “Montecito Retirement Resort” and is one of the oldest and most prestigious CCRCs in California. It is a nonprofit community run by the Montecito Retirement Association, and it consistently earns top marks. Newsweek’s 2025 rankings placed Casa Dorinda among the top 15 CCRCs in California (and top 140 nationally), citing its excellence in amenities and care. It is CARF accredited (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) – a gold seal indicating the highest standards in continuing. The community has been home to many notable residents over the years, including philanthropists and retired CEOs, which speaks to its reputation. During its nearly 50-year history, Casa Dorinda has won numerous local “best retirement community” awards and has been praised for its handling of resident wellbeing. In resident satisfaction surveys, Casa scores exceptionally high for its food, environment, and nursing care. The Montecito location – nestled between ocean and mountains in an upscale community – and the combination of luxury lifestyle with lifetime healthcare make Casa Dorinda truly one of a kind. Prospective residents often plan years in advance to secure a place here, reflecting the community’s elite status.
Vi at La Jolla Village – La Jolla, San Diego (Coastal Luxury CCRC)
Monthly Cost: Vi at La Jolla Village is a Type A (LifeCare) CCRC offering upscale independent living with guaranteed care. It requires an upfront entrance fee that can range widely from around $278,000 up to $2.27 million , depending on the unit size and the refundable plan chosen. This one-time fee secures your residence and pre-pays for future care. Additionally, there is a monthly fee which in 2024 starts at about $4,270 for the smallest apartments and rises to around $11,790 for the largest or for double occupancy. The monthly fee covers most services and amenities (meals, housekeeping, utilities, etc.), with only ancillary items like extra meals or personal supplies charged separately. Notably, under Vi’s LifeCare contract, if a resident transfers to the on-site assisted living, memory support, or skilled nursing center, their monthly fee remains essentially the same as it was in independent living – they do not pay the much higher “market rate” for those care levels. This provides cost predictability and can be a significant financial benefit over time. (According to FamilyAssets data, the average monthly cost across all levels at Vi La Jolla is about $6,100, reflecting the blend of independent and higher care costs.) In summary, Vi has a high upfront cost but then relatively inclusive monthly fees, making it a true “buy-in for peace of mind” model.
Acceptance Requirements: Minimum age for residency is 62 years. Prospective residents must apply and show that they are financially qualified (entrance fees are paid out-of-pocket, and residents must have assets/income to also pay ongoing fees). Typically, Vi Living (the company) requires that a person’s assets be roughly 1.5–2 times the entrance fee and that they have sufficient income to cover monthly fees for life. A medical evaluation is also required: Vi at La Jolla generally requires new residents to move in while they are independent (or at most only needing minimal assistance) – they must be able to reside safely in independent living at the outset. Like many CCRCs, Vi will not usually accept someone who already requires heavy nursing care or who has certain unmanaged chronic conditions at entry (this is to ensure the resident can enjoy the independent lifestyle for some time). That said, Vi does permit direct entry to its care center for those who, for example, only want assisted living or skilled nursing – but those would be on a rental basis and subject to availability. For the primary track (LifeCare contract), an incoming resident signs a continuing care agreement and often can choose between different refund options for their entrance fee (0% refundable vs 50% refundable, etc., which affect the price). In summary, one needs good health and substantial financial resources to be accepted as a Vi at La Jolla resident.
Amenities: Vi at La Jolla provides a full-service, luxury retirement lifestyle. It is situated in San Diego’s “Golden Triangle” near UC San Diego, offering convenient access to La Jolla’s beaches, shops, and cultural attractions. On campus, amenities are plentiful: restaurant-style dining venues with seasonal gourmet menus (including a formal dining room and a casual café/bistro); a private dining room for parties; a 24-hour concierge and front desk (to assist with everything from receiving packages to arranging transportation); weekly housekeeping and flat linen service for all apartments; and scheduled transportation for shopping, outings, and medical appointments. For recreation and wellness, Vi boasts an excellent fitness center equipped with treadmills, bikes, weight machines, and more, plus a dedicated aerobics studio and an outdoor pool and spa (where water aerobics classes are held). There are also massage therapy rooms and a day spa on-site. Other amenities include an on-site movie theater, an arts and crafts studio, a woodworking shop, a billiards and game room, a library, and beautifully landscaped courtyards and walking paths. Lifelong learning is encouraged – residents frequent lectures at nearby UCSD or attend Vi’s in-house lecture series. The community also has a computer center and business area for resident use. Socially, Vi offers dozens of resident-led clubs and committees (from bridge to gardening to volunteer groups). The community organizes frequent excursions (e.g. to the La Jolla Playhouse, museums, concerts, and even trips to the symphony or Balboa Park). On-site medical services are a key perk: there is a clinic space for visiting physicians, and health and wellness checks are readily available. Vi at La Jolla’s grounds include putting greens for golfers and even a dog park area for pet owners. All told, the amenities rival those of a private upscale college or resort – one reason Vi at La Jolla is often described as “a resort-style haven” for retirees.
Age Requirements: 62+ (strict). Vi enforces that at least one occupant of an independent living apartment must be 62 or older (the minimum age might even be 65 for new contracts in some cases, but generally 62). Spouses typically both need to meet the age requirement, though exceptions can be made if one is slightly younger and the other is over 62. The average resident age is mid-80s; many move in during their mid- to late- seventies.
Care Services: Vi at La Jolla is designed to allow residents to “age in place” within the community’s continuum of care. For independent living residents, Vi provides preventive wellness programs, fitness classes, and access to routine healthcare (flu shots, health lectures, etc.). When a resident’s health changes, they can transition to the on-site Assisted Living apartments or Memory Support suites or the Skilled Nursing/Rehab facility, all of which are located in a separate but connected part of the community (the Care Center). Assisted Living services include help with personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming), medication management, escorts to meals, and so on, delivered by nursing aides and licensed nurses. Memory care at Vi is specialized for those with dementia – a secure environment with structured daily routines and therapies to maximize quality of life. Skilled nursing provides 24-hour medical supervision, IV therapy, wound care, physical therapy, and rehabilitation services after surgeries or serious illnesses. Vi’s care staff is known to be highly trained; many are long-tenured. One of Vi’s strengths is that if a couple lives there and one partner needs more care, that partner can move to the care center and the other can remain in independent living, all within the same community – they’re steps apart, not across town. Vi’s LifeCare contract ensures that monthly fees do not increase when moving to a higher level of care, which removes a huge potential stress for families. Residents in assisted living or nursing pay only for extra meals or personal incidentals; their housing and care services are covered by the ongoing fee. Vi employs 24-hour nursing staff, and has an emergency call system where any call for help is answered promptly by on-site personnel. The community also coordinates with outside medical providers – being in La Jolla, world-class hospitals (like Scripps and UCSD Health) are nearby if acute care is needed. Vi’s approach to care is comprehensive: it addresses physical, social, and emotional wellness, which is one reason it has earned a reputation for excellence.
Accommodations: Vi at La Jolla offers over 30 different floor plans for its independent living apartments – ranging from one-bedroom units (~700 sq ft) to expansive two-bedroom plus den units over 1,500 sq ft. There are 403 independent living residences in total. All apartments feature full kitchens, high-end finishes, and many have balconies with lovely views (either of the landscaped campus, city skyline, or distant ocean, given La Jolla’s coastal plateau). The apartments were designed condo-style, with plenty of light and storage. Residents can customize paint and decor as they wish. In the Care Center, there are 36 assisted living apartments, 23 memory care suites, and 60 skilled nursing private/semi-private rooms. These care accommodations are designed to be comfortable and homey, so a resident moving from independent living still feels at home. For instance, assisted living apartments at Vi have a separate bedroom and living room, a private bathroom, and a mini-kitchen, allowing continuity of lifestyle but with caregivers nearby. The entire community underwent renovations in recent years to keep decor modern and stylish – it truly feels like a luxury condominium complex attached to a boutique hotel (which is not surprising, as Vi began as a Hyatt-managed venture). Housekeeping is weekly (or more often if needed in the Care Center), and maintenance requests are handled promptly by on-site staff. The community is pet-friendly in independent living (with some size restrictions), and even in assisted living some small pets may be allowed. Security and safety features are robust: 24-hour front desk, gated entry, emergency generators, and every unit has an emergency call system. Overall, the accommodations at Vi are among the finest in senior housing, offering both elegance and practicality (e.g., step-in showers, lever handles, etc. for senior-friendly living).
Reputation & Awards: Vi at La Jolla Village is widely recognized as one of the top senior communities in California. In fact, Newsweek’s 2025 rankings of America’s best CCRCs placed Vi at La Jolla at #10 in California (and #112 nationally). All of Vi’s communities, including La Jolla, earned “Best Senior Living” awards from U.S. News & World Report in 2022-2024 based on high resident satisfaction. CARF accredits the community and has a longstanding reputation for luxury – it opened in 1996 as part of the Classic Residence by Hyatt brand and later rebranded to Vi Living, maintaining that high Hyatt standard. Residents often cite the warm, attentive staff and the vibrant social life as key positives. Families take comfort in the LifeCare promise and the financial stability of Vi (Vi Living operates 10 communities and has decades of experience). The La Jolla location also means residents are in an intellectually engaging environment – many are retired professors, doctors, or business leaders, and they continue to enjoy pursuits at UCSD or volunteer in the community. Vi at La Jolla consistently has waiting lists for certain larger units due to demand. In summary, its combination of coastal luxury, comprehensive care, and corporate-backed service quality makes it one of the most elite places to retire, not just in Southern California, but in the country.
Oakmont of Segovia (Segovia at Palm Desert) – Palm Desert (Desert Resort Luxury)
Monthly Cost: Oakmont of Segovia (formerly just “Segovia at Palm Desert”) is a luxury retirement community offering independent and assisted living in the Palm Springs desert region. Segovia uses a hybrid financial model: residents pay a substantial entrance fee (deposit) between approximately $350,000 and $700,000 upfront, which is mostly refundable to the resident or their estate (minus a one-time 10% fee). In addition, there is a monthly rent that varies by the size of the apartment and level of service – roughly $3,500 to $7,000 per month for most residences. (The average assisted living price at Segovia is around $5,500 monthly.) This entrance fee model effectively guarantees priority access to any care services and can lock in a lower monthly rate than pure rental communities. It’s somewhat like a CCRC contract, though Segovia does not offer skilled nursing on-site – the entrance fee secures your independent/assisted living apartment for life. For those not wishing to pay upfront, Segovia/Oakmont may have rental options, but the primary model is the entrance fee with a contractual agreement. Overall, this makes Segovia one of the most expensive options in the desert, but also one of the most service-rich.
Acceptance Requirements: Age requirement is typically 60+, and most residents are retirees (often 70s and 80s). Since Segovia’s model involves an entrance deposit and long-term residency, management will verify an applicant’s financial ability for the deposit and ongoing fees. There may also be a health evaluation; however, unlike some CCRCs, Segovia does accept residents who need assisted living right away – they don’t all have to move in independently. The key is that a prospective resident’s care needs must match what Segovia can provide (they provide assisted living and memory care support, but not nursing-home level care). Given the sizable entrance fee, the community tends to attract affluent individuals (many from the golf and country club circles in the Palm Desert/Rancho Mirage area). There is an application process, but it’s not as lengthy as a LifeCare CCRC – it’s more akin to putting down a deposit and signing a residency agreement. Medical paperwork from one’s doctor and an assessment by Segovia’s nurse are usually required to ensure the community can safely meet the person’s needs.
Amenities: Segovia offers a desert luxury lifestyle, often described as “country club living” for seniors. The property features Spanish-inspired architecture with lush grounds and courtyards offering beautiful views of the mountains and palm trees. Amenities include a spacious clubhouse with a formal dining room (chef-prepared fine dining), a casual bistro, and even a private dining room that residents can reserve for personal gatherings. There’s a full bar/lounge on-site – used for happy hours and events (it’s not open full-time like a public bar, but for special resident socials). For wellness, Segovia has a fully equipped fitness center, an outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi, and daily exercise classes. There’s also an on-site spa/salon offering haircuts, manicures, and massage. The community has a movie theater that screens films regularly, an arts and crafts studio, a library, and game rooms. Segovia’s activity program is robust: residents can enjoy daily happy hours, live entertainment, lectures, and outings to the nearby shopping centers, art galleries, and the McCallum Theatre for concerts. The community sits adjacent to a high-end shopping and dining area, so many attractions are within walking distance or a short golf-cart ride. Segovia is also pet-friendly and has walking paths and even a dog run area. Concierge services (such as arranging transportation or personal errands) are provided on request. The overall atmosphere is akin to a private resort – the décor is elegant (marble floors, grand piano in the lobby, fireplaces in some common areas) and residents are treated like guests at a luxury hotel. In fact, multiple reviewers have commented that the service and environment feel like a “five-star hotel”.
Age Requirements: 60+ (primarily 65+). Segovia’s residents are generally older adults – many in their late 70s or 80s – though younger retirees in their 60s are certainly present as well. The community does allow younger adults with disabilities on a case-by-case basis (per California law, an RCFE can serve 18-59 if their needs are compatible), but this is uncommon. Essentially, Segovia is intended for seniors; its social programming and lifestyle cater to that demographic.
Care Services: Oakmont of Segovia provides independent living and assisted living, and some memory care services, but not skilled nursing. Residents who live independently can add on care as needed and eventually transition to full assisted living within their same apartment (or relocate to a different unit if more appropriate). Care services include assistance with all activities of daily living, medication management, continence care, coordination of medical appointments, and more, delivered by trained caregivers and overseen by a licensed nurse. There is an on-site nurse available 7 days a week (and on-call 24/7) for health monitoring and emergencies. Segovia prides itself on a high staff-to-resident ratio, with staff often comparing their approach to “hotel concierge meets nursing aide” to give very attentive personal care. In fact, one family member noted “They had the best staff I've ever seen – they were like people in a hotel” when describing the attentiveness. The staff handle housekeeping and laundry for residents as well. While Segovia doesn’t have a skilled nursing ward, they do partner with local home health and hospice agencies if a resident requires those services in their apartment. The community also provides transportation to medical appointments (and being in Palm Desert, there are many top doctors and Eisenhower Medical Center nearby). For memory care, Segovia does not have a separate locked memory unit, but they do accommodate early-stage memory loss residents in assisted living, and Oakmont Senior Living (Segovia’s managing company) is known for specialized memory care programs at its other communities. An important aspect of Segovia’s care is security – 24-hour front desk and gated community – and a vigilant eye on residents’ wellbeing. Emergency call systems are in each unit and checked often. In summary, Segovia’s care approach is “aging in place” up through assisted living. If a resident eventually needs nursing home care, they would transition out, but the entrance fee refund can help cover that next step. Until that point, Segovia’s team strives to meet residents’ needs, enabling them to remain in a familiar, luxurious environment as long as possible.
Accommodations: Segovia’s apartments are spacious and well-appointed, with options up to 2-bedroom villas. Many units include high-end touches like fireplaces, full kitchens with granite counters, and private patios or balconies. Some residences even have attached garages (especially the ground-level villa styles). One-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans are common; even studios are larger-than-average. The style is desert contemporary – high ceilings, large windows to take in views, and quality finishes. Select homes have views of the emerald-green golf course next door or the Santa Rosa mountains. All units come with in-unit laundry, individually controlled HVAC, and emergency pull-cords. Because Segovia was built relatively recently (2010s), everything meets modern accessibility standards. The community offers weekly housekeeping and linen service. Maintenance requests are handled promptly. Given the entrance fee model, residents essentially “own” the right to their apartment for life, so many personalize their units with their own furniture and décor, truly making it home. Storage is ample, and parking (covered carports or garages) is available for those who still drive. The campus layout is like an upscale condo complex with resort amenities clustered in the clubhouse, so residents are never far from dining or activities. In essence, accommodations at Segovia allow residents to live as if in a luxury condominium, with the bonus of hotel-like services and healthcare support on standby.
Reputation & Awards: Segovia has garnered a reputation as “the gold standard” in the Palm Springs area for senior living, according to a family review from one resident review. It has earned “Best Retirement Community in Coachella Valley” honors from local publications in past years. Online, it holds high ratings (often five stars) for its food, staff, and ambiance. When Oakmont Senior Living took over management, they continued Segovia’s tradition of excellence – Oakmont is known for luxury communities throughout California, and Segovia is one of their flagship desert properties. While not as widely known nationally due to its smaller size, Segovia impresses virtually everyone who visits. It’s been featured in Palm Springs Life magazine as an example of “exquisite possibilities” in senior living (highlighting its art collection and architectural details). Residents are often active, accomplished individuals – it’s not unusual to find retired dignitaries or community leaders living there. In summary, Segovia/Oakmont of Segovia is highly respected for its resort-like atmosphere, excellent dining (even called “award-winning” cuisine), and attentive care, making it arguably the most elite assisted living option in the desert region of Southern California.
